¸ñÀû: Fear of falling is defined as the level of confidence in performing
daily activities without falling. Increased fear of falling can lead
to worsening of physical function, activity restriction and increased
fall risk. The Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) is widely
used to assess fear of falling. In this study, we aimed to examine
reliability and validation of short form of FES-I as a screening tool
in older population. ¹æ¹ý:Total of 155 subjects of 65 years of age and older were included in
this study. Participants were asked to complete the questionnaire¡¯s
content included the KFES-I, scales of fall history and DHI. Age, sex,
BMI, visual analog scale(VAS) of dizziness, comorbidities,
differential diagnosis of dizziness and the history of falls in the
past were collected from medical records and participant interview.
Correlation analysis between the full 16-item KFES-I and the 7- item
short form KFES-I results was performed. We also examined correlation
between KFES-I and subjective perception of dizziness in patients
presenting with dizziness. °á°ú:Mean score for long-form KFES-I was 29.18 ¡¾12.77(range 16-59) and for
short form, 12.67 ¡¾ 5.31(range 7-25). Comparison between the 16-item
and 7-item KFES-I showed significant correlation. The KFES-I scores also
showed significant correlation with dizziness handicap inventory (DHI)
scores in patients with dizziness. Functional subscore (DHI-F) showed
stronger correlation among subscores of DHI. °á·Ð:The present study compared the Korean version of the 16-item and the
7-item short KFES-I with a population of patients with dizziness. The
findings revealed that the original and short KFES-I scores were
strongly correlated. Both scales displayed excellent internal
consistency. The results also showed that the 16-item and 7-item KFES-
I scores were associated with DHI of dizziness.
The results support the possible application of the short form of FES-
I to screen fear of falling in older adults, which can improve the
feasibility of health screening. Further studies are needed
investigate fear of falling in various etiologies of dizziness. |
