CHONDROLIPOMA ARISING IN THE EUSTACHIAN TUBE
Abstract
Introduction
Only 15% of all lipomas are located in the head and neck region, most
often involving the back of the neck. Lipoma is divided into several
categories according to histological structure, including fibrous
/fibro-/, spindle /spindle cell/, pleomorphic /pleomorphic/, muscle
/myo-/, vascular /angio-/, chondroid /chondroid/, myxo, and bone
lipoma. Chondrolipoma, a rare variant of lipoma, is a benign
mesenchymal tumor rarely involving the nasopharynx. A rarer variant of
lipoma, chondrolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors. The
proliferation of mature adipocytes forms them and contain different
amounts of mature cartilaginous tissue; Weiss ¡° Enzinger and Weiss's
soft tissue tumors¡±, 4th ed: Mosby, St Louis; 2001 Maybe, This
represents the third reported case of a nasopharyngeal chondrolipoma.
Case presentation
In this case report, we describe the presentation and treatment of a
patient with chondrolipoma arising in the eustachian tube. A 9-year-
old girl was referred for ENT assessment with a 4-year history of
increasing nasal congestion and hearing loss. Our patient was examined
at our hospital, and nasal endoscopy revealed a nasopharynx mass,
computed tomography revealed a well-defined, hypodense, lesion
involving the left Eustachian tube and nasopharynx, measuring 1.4 ¡¿
2.1 cm. The mass was excised using an endoscopic approach and was
found to originate from the cartilaginous portion of the Eustachian
tube. The tumor was sent for histopathologic evaluation.
Conclusion
Chondrolipoma of the Eustachian tube is very rare compared with other
types of lipomas. Improved radiologic modalities aid the diagnosis of
this benign tumor. Endoscopic removal of the tumor is possible and has
helped in early recovery. This is the first report of a lipoma
originating from the cartilaginous portion of the Eustachian tube, and
the tumor was removed successfully by an endoscopic approach at our
hospital.
