The most of vallecular cyst are asymptomatic and considered a self-limiting lesion. In adults, it can be detected by incidental gastrofibroscopy or laryngoscopic exam. Because vallecular is located at the laryngeal inlet, infection can cause significant complication. Abscess of vallecular area is known to be related with acute epiglottitis or impaction of foreign body, which can result in urgent condition such as in acute airway obstruction or swallowing difficulties. Therefore, in case of vallecular abscess, prompt intervention is required.
We herein report two cases of patients with vallecular abscess without epiglottitis and foreign body and review the current understanding of pathology, diagnosis and treatment of the vallecular abscess. |
