¸ñÀû: Osteoporosis characterized by generalized reduced bone mass may involve the temporal bone housing cochlea and vestibular labyrinth and affect hearing and balance function. The aim of the present study is to determine the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and the sensitivity of hearing and balance in a representative sample of the entire population. ¹æ¹ý:The study was based on the data obtained from 2008 through 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The subjects enrolled in the study was 8803, of which 3781 were males and 5022 were females, aged 50 years and older. A dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan and serum vitamin D level were measure in all subjects. Hearing sensitivity was evaluated with pure tone audiometer and balance dysfunction was evaluated by the Romberg Test of Standing Balance on Firm and Compliant Support Surfaces. °á°ú:Pure tone thresholds average was significantly higher in all frequencies in women with osteopenia/osteoporosis than women with normal BMD. There was no difference in the proportion of vitamin D deficiency regarding BMD level. After adjusting for known risk factors, decreased BMD levels were associated with higher odds of hearing loss and balance dysfunction. °á·Ð:Our findings suggest that the decreased BMD might be associated with hearing and balance impairments, especially in older population. |
