¸ñÀû: It has been reported that unilateral hearing loss(UHL) can
result in educational and psycho-social difficulties,
especially in young people. Nevertheless, there are few
studies investigating psychopathological abnormalities in
patients with UHL. We aim to evaluate the
psychopathological influence of UHL in Korean 19-year-
old males. ¹æ¹ý:We reviewed the Korean military multiphasic personal
inventory (KMPI) military profiles of 19-year old males who
were tested from February 2012 to January 2013
retrospectively. KMPI profiles of 1115 individuals with
UHL who do not have other physical health problem were
compared with those of 7700 normal controls. The UHL
group was subdivided into three groups according to
severity of UHL (mild, moderate and severe UHL)
depending on the threshold of pure tone audiometry. The
relation between KMPI results and severity of UHL was
further evaluated. °á°ú:Whole UHL group showed significantly increased scales in neurosis set including anxiety, depression and somatization, and psychopathy set consisting of personality disorder, schizophrenia and paranoid compared to those of normal controls (p<0.0001). A significantly decreased result on the faking-good response scale and a significantly increased result on the faking-bad response were also observed in the UHL group (p<0.0001). Among subdivided groups, scales of each categories were not related to severity of UHL (p=0.672). Regardless of severity of UHL, faking-good response scale was decreased (p<0.0001) and faking-bad response scale was increased (mild UHL p=0.002, moderate and severe UHL p<0.0001) than normal controls. Significant difference was also observed in all three groups compared to controls in the neurosis and psychopathy set (p<0.0001). °á·Ð:Young male with UHL showed markedly abnormal results
on the KMPI profiles compared to normal controls,
suggesting that UHL is related to the psychopathology in
young males in Korea. Therefore, the clinicians are
recommended to consider possibility of
psychopathological problems while evaluating and
counseling patients with UHL. |
