¸ñÀû: Calcium alginate is a widely adopted gel-transforming biodegradable material used for nasal packing with the potential to reduce pain and improve comfort. However, few randomised controlled trials have investigated the efficacy of calcium alginate nasal packing material among widely used gel-transforming biodegradable materials. ¹æ¹ý:A total of 27 patients (54 nostrils) who underwent bilateral endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis were enrolled. Only patients with computed tomography chronic rhinosinusitis severity score differences 1 between the sinuses were included. One nostril was packed with calcium alginate, while the other was packed with carboxymethyl cellulose. Visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for postoperative pain, discomfort from nasal discharge, and removal pain were analysed. Two independent rhinologists blinded to the assessments separately scored adhesion, oedema, and infection in the same patients twice from postoperative endoscopic digital photography. °á°ú:All inter-rater variability in the adhesion, oedema, and infection scores was statistically acceptable. There was no statistical difference in the VAS scores for postoperative pain, discomfort from nasal discharge, or postoperative dressing pain. Calcium alginate packing showed statistically lower adhesion severity scores than carboxymethyl cellulose at 4 weeks, as well as statistically lower oedema severity scores. The calcium alginate infection severity scores were generally lower, but there was no statistical difference between the investigated periods. °á·Ð:Calcium alginate nasal packing has beneficial effects that help prevent postoperative complications from endoscopic sinus surgery. And packing material is adapted as material degradation periods. |
