Merkel cell carcinoma(MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine skin
cancer that originates from merkel cell in the skin. The most frequent
location of involvement is skin of head and neck. Recently, we have
experienced a 86-year-old female patient diagnosed merkel cell carcinoma.
She initially presented with 2-year history of a tumor on her left
cheek.Physical examination revealed a 2.5-cm diameter, firm, painless mass
on her left cheek. On incisional biopsy that was done in our dermatologic
clinic, Merkel cell carcinoma was suspected. In the preoperative radiologic
evaluation, regional and distant metastasis was unremarkable. The wide
excision of tumor via facial skin incision was performed and the repeated
immunohistochemical studies showed the same results of the initial biopsy.
Subsequently, the patient underwent adjuvant radiation therapy. Therefore,
we suggest a case of Merkel cell carcinoma with literature review.
