Although uncommon, acquired external auditory canal (EAC) stenosis is an entity that is encountered by many otolaryngologists. EAC stenosis is an uncommon entity resulting from a number of different causes including infection, trauma, tumor, and inflammation. Its incidence has been estimated at 0.6 cases per 100,000. EAC stenosis results in a blind skin-lined canal just lateral to the tympanic membrane and commonly presents as a conductive hearing loss. The intervening segment between the medial aspect of the patent EAC and tympanic membrane usually consists of a fibrous plug. Despite its clinical simplicity, this entity has been referred to by several different terms including medial meatal fibrosis, EAC atresia, and EAC stenosis. The authors have recently experienced successful surgical results without restenosis up to date.We used the following surgical techniques, the fibrous plug was excised, the cartilaginous and/or bony canal was enlarged and the canal was recovered with split-thickness skin graft. Therefore we are reporting 2 cases (3 ears) of acquired EAC stenosis with literature review.
