¸ñÀû: Worldwide tobacco consumption is the most important risk factor
for Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Candida albicans (CA) is
a commonly isolated commensal in the oral cavity and has been
suggested to play a role in oral carcinogenesis. We attempted to
study the variation in Candida both qualitatively and
quantitatively in tobacco chewers (C) and non-chewers (NC) with
the former being the prime group amongst South - East Asians who
are inflicted by OSCC. ¹æ¹ý:Frequency of isolation (FOI), mean colony forming units (mCFU) and
speciation of Candida were done using whole unstimulated saliva
samples from sixty one NC and fifty three C. The data was subjected
to appropriate statistical analysis using SPSS 20 for Windows. °á°ú:The isolation frequency and colonisation was less in C compared to NC
but the difference was insignificant. Both CA and non Candida
albicans Candida species (NCACS) were isolated in the study groups. °á·Ð:The quantitative changes induced in Candida carriage and isolation
were not significant among C and NC but the species isolated seemed
to be considerably influenced by the habit of chewing tobacco
according to us. |
